Job Search Strategy

Overwhelmed by Job Search

I am on a job search, but feel overwhelmed by all the resources. I'm interested in companies with an international presence in the field of survey research, market analysis, organizational consulting/human resources management, etc. Where should I look and how can I gain an advantage in obtaining the advertised and "hidden" job openings?

Job Change after 25 Years in Retail

I'm looking to make a job change after 25 years in my own retail business. I am uncertain about what I want to do and would like to meet with a career couselor to discuss some different options. Do you offer this type of service?

I certainly would recommmend that you work with a career counselor. You could contact: The Jewish Vocational Service at 216 West Jackson Blvd., Suite 700, Chicago, Illinois 60606, (312) 673-3400. The Skokie office of JVS is at 5150 W Golf Road, (847) 568-5150.

Moving to Chicago to Find Work

I am a recent college graduate and currently live in a small town. My degree is in business and management. I was looking to getting a retail management job, but after working at some local retail stores, I know I do not want to do that. I'd like a job where I have a steady schedule (no second shifts) like the banking industry or marketing. Chicago is very appealing to me and I have already planned out where I want to live, what I will do, etc. But I can't get past the first hurdle: getting a job.

Returning to the Workforce Challenge

I am a 45 year old CPA. I have been at home raising my kids for 13 years. I spent 8 years prior to that working for one of the big four public accounting firms, as a manager. I need help figuring out how to get back into the work force. I have sent out many resumes but with no success.

Over 50 and Unemployed

My husband and I both recently lost our jobs. We are both 58 and unable to retire at this time. I've been in the home building industry for 20 years and really don't know anything else. My husband has been in the grocery business for about 27years. We are both concerned about the possibility of ever finding a job at our age. Please help us determine what we need to do in order to get back into the work place.

Older, Over-Qualified and Consulting

I am an engineer, with 17+ years of experience and was downsized 5 years ago. I have been unable to secure a position since then and I have started my own consulting business which is not doing well. I am in the 45-50 age bracket and considered 'old', ˜overqualified', etc. I had bosses who were mean and coworkers who were sometimes sexually aggressive, other times chauvinistic, and I lost some jobs because I stood up to my bosses/coworkers. Now, I cannot secure even interviews. The problem is: Why am I turning recruiters/employers off?

Networking

I just completed the apprentice training program for Cook County Illinois in construction. Now I find I am having a problem in entering the field as an apprentice. Everyone I contact says they have no openings. Can you help and point me in the right direction?

Unfortunately, I do not have any direct contacts in the construction field. However, one of the first rules of networking is that you NEVER ask directly for a job. The idea is to build relationships to create opportunities.

Entry Level Employment with an MBA

I received my MBA with a concentration in finance in the summer of 2007. Since then, I have been searching for a new position to take advantage of the degree and to fulfill a desire to have more challenging work opportunities. It has been very difficult to say the least. My current position is as administrative support at a private university. My work history is not extensive, but I am more than capable of managing a position of "higher authority" and responsibility. I am not sure how to get my resume to those who would have a serious interest in providing me with what I am looking for. What advice can you give me to spearhead a more assertive approach to job-hunting?

Finding a Career Counselor

How do I go about choosing a career counselor that has a proven track record in helping individuals change careers? I am really struggling with many questions such as: Who am I? What is my purpose in life? What are my passions, and how can I apply them to a new career? I've come to the conclusion that I can't make these decisions all on my own. I've tried reading books on career change, but at this point, I believe serious coaching and networking is the best way for me to proceed. Should I expect to pay for these services?
